What is a folktale? • Story that began through oral story telling • Passed down through generations • Teaches a lesson • OR explains why things are the way they are.
Characteristics • Simple, straightforward • Characters represent human qualities: wisdom, laziness, cleverness, foolishness, good or evil • Can include magic or supernatural elements
Types • Trickster tales • Fables • Why? Stories • Fairytales
Trickster Tale • Trickster character is clever or devious • Causes problems for himself and others • Usually goes unpunished- portrayed as innocent/devilish not true evil. • Cultures have specific tricksters- • Spiders (Anansi) in Africa • Fox, Hare or Coyote in North America • Badger in Japan
Fables • Short stories that teach a lesson • Animals are usually characters, with human characteristics • Stress common themes such the importance of cooperation or looking at different viewpoints.
Why? stories • Explain how something came to be • OR why it is the way it is
Fairytales • Explain elements of good and bad • Include predictable qualities such as “Once upon a time…” and “Happily ever after.” • Have a hero or heroine • Often include magic
