New Moon • During the new moon, we see the side of the moon that is not illuminated by the sun. When we see the moon, it is like a dark circle in the sky.
Waxing Crescent • A waxing crescent is sometimes called a young moon. It is always seen in the west after sunset. A small part of the right side is illuminated.
First Quarter • The first quarter is about 1 week away from the new moon. One half of the moon is illuminated by the sun.
Waxing Gibbous • The waxing gibbous is more than half lit, but less than full. It is the last phase before the full moon.
Full Moon • The full moon occurs when the moon is on the opposite side of the earth. It is fully illuminated by the sun.
Waning Gibbous • When the waning gibbous is in the sky, more than half of the surface is illuminated. The waning gibbous occurs a few days after the full moon.
Last Quarter • Three weeks after the new moon, we once again see half of the illuminated part, which is the last quarter.
Waning Cresent • In the fourth week, the moon is reduced to a sliver on the left side which is illuminated by the sun.
