Academic community • University students in Finland are not considered customers but equal members of the academic community. Both the staff and the students have collective aims in many ways. • Consequently, it is usually easy to approach the staff (please respect the appointment times). The members of staff think that it is important that students take up issues they find problematic. • Students are also an important part of the decision making processes in the university • Student organizations and the University's units often have well-established practices for cooperation through which the students influence the development of their study environment.
Demarcation of study right • Study time is demarcated since 1.8.2005 • Targeted completion time for Bachelor’s degree is three and for Master’s degree two academic years. • Students accepted only for a Master's degree have the right to complete the degree two years past the targeted completion time 2 + 2 academic years. • Demarcation begins on the academic year when the study place has been accepted • The student can register as non-attending for four semesters (= two academic years) which are not included in the study time • There are some legislative reasons that can extend the study time, e.g. maternal leave during studentship • For more information: http://www.utu.fi/demarcation
