  1. Biome: an environment that has a characteristic climax community. Land and aquatic biomes.

  2. Land Biomes Tundra: the northernmost land biome. Very Cold. Permafrost: a layer of permanently frozen subsoil which is characteristic of the tundra. In the summer, it thaws a few centimeters below the surface and in the winter it freezes solid. This rips the roots of plants and keeps them stunted.

  3. - Mostly treeless, but some stunted trees. - Covered by moss, lichen, and grass.

  4. - Some animals migrate into the tundra during the summer to eat the plants and animals that come in.

  5. Taiga: Located south of the tundra. Dominated by great coniferous forests of fir, pine, and spruce. Winters are extremely cold and summers are mild.

  6. - Home of the Giant Redwoods.

  7. - Allows for reproduction of many animals and plants.

  8. Temperate Deciduous Forest: Located south of the taiga. - Characterized by changing seasons and leaf fall.

  9. - Forests of oak, maple, beech, and birch - trees that shed their leaves in autumn. - Sufficient rainfall, cold winters. Humus: Organic matter stored in a layer of decaying leaves and twigs.

  10. Grasslands: vast areas covered with grasses and small leafy plants, usually found in the interior portions of many continents. - Most precipitation occurs in one season. - Hot summers and cold winters.

  11. - Many grass-like plants with many herbivores eating the plants. Savannah: tropical grasslands which change from wet to very dry for the seasons. Dotted with groves of trees.

  12. Tropical Rain Forests: Where the temperature stays warm and rain falls year round. Receive 200-400 cm of rainfall each year. Temp stays constant at 25o C. Located near the equator. Home to more species of animals or plants than can be found in all the rest of the land biomes combined. Life is rich and varied.

  13. Many animals are tree dwellers.

  14. Deserts: where there is less than 25 centimeters of rainfall per year. - Sahara - nothing grows because there is no rainfall and winds are dry and hot. - Seasonal deserts - have certain seasons where rainfall occurs.

  15. - Plants have adapted ways to deal with the lack of rainfall.

  16. - Animals get most of their water from plants they eat.
