ACT ONE • Introduces protagonist • Establishes protagonist’s goal • Establishes MDQ • Introduces tone, setting, attitude • Introduces central antagonist(s) • Introduces subplot, secondary action line • Includes major event (conflict) launching ACT TWO events
ACT TWO • Protagonist faces challenges, reversals • Sub-plot develops • Characters come together • Complications • Complexities • Surprises • Crisis—dark moment • Turning point leads to ACT THREE
ACT THREE • Protagonist takes fateful action • Crisis develops over scene or sequence of scenes • “Milk it for all it’s worth” • Climax—resolution of crisis • Resolution • Catharsis
EXPOSITION • Space, spread throughout ACTS 1 and 2 • Spoon feed, slowly, imperceptibly • Show, don’t tell, essential information • Include within action, within conflict • Do NOT pause to inform • Ask: “Does the audience need to know this now?” “Does the audience need to know this at all?” • How little we know about each other—or need to!
