Africa has been devestated by deforestation in many ways. The thought that Africa is mostly jungle and wide open savannah with all sorts of wild animals roaming around is more myth than fact. Africa's open plains have been reduced mostly to grazing land and its rain forests are becoming less and less a prominent feature throughout the continent. The effects of the deforestation of Africa are mind-boggling.
The pollution of rivers, lakes and acquifers from domestic and industrial wastewater discharges, mining runoff, agro-chemicals and other sources in now a growing threat to water resources in most countries in Southern Africa.
Parts of coastal Africa south of the Sahara are experiencing serious desertification problems as a result of mismanagement of natural resources such as mangrove forests. The environmental importance of mangroves is crazy , and is the object of many studies. The matter is discussed in a recent UNESCO publication .
