Five-number summary • We can use a Five-Number Summary to describe data in a way that is easier to read. • It uses five boundary points: • The minimum (the smallest number) • The first quartile (the median of the first half) • The median (the middle number) • The third quartile (the median of the second half) • The maximum(the largest number)

Example: michaeljordan’s total points • Example: Find the five-number summary for the number of points scored by the Chicago Bulls during the 1997 – 1998 season. First, order the data from smallest to largest: 167, 198, 288, 375, 376, 416, 663, 764, 841, 984, 2357 Minimum Median Maximum 1st Quartile (middle of 1st half) 3rd Quartile (middle of 2nd half) Box Plot or Box-and-Whisker Plot Can you find the five-number summary in the box plot?
