Mount rushmore, south dakota • The iconic faces of four of our former Presidents of the United States are carved on the Black Hills of South Dakota. They are George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. They were chosen because of what each President represents: • George Washington represents the struggle for independence • Thomas Jefferson represents the idea of government by the people • Abraham Lincoln represents his ideas on equality and the permanent union of the states • Theodore Roosevelt represents the 20th century role of the U.S. in world affairs • The mountain itself was named for Charles E.
