"This is different than the way some of us experienced learning. A base value has been threatened, causing fear."
Fear • it can impede our learning • we can choose to sit in the known • overwhelm our senses
Interest Area • Our hope is to help faculty bridge the gap between themselves and technology. • We want them to realize they aren’t by themselves and their apprehensions about technology are valid. • Acknowledge these fears and realize they can move on from it. They have the power to play and try new things.
Data Collection • Gave out 2 different questionnaires during two sittings • Please list 5 ways you view yourself as a teacher • Please list 5 ways you view yourself when using technology
Data Analyzation Under Construction
Planning Action Steps • Time • Play • scaffold • MPFS one book • Reflective piece
TIME • We have the desire to learn and play, but time allotted creates a large gap. • Administration • Ask for 2 half days and 20 minutes at the beginning of each faculty meeting to play • Provide guidelines to make sure time on the web is used effectively
Play • Give the freedom to explore Web 2.o. • Begin to use the internet for more than budgeting and shopping at zappos
Scaffold • Schema theory- build new knowledge from the experiences you bring with you. • Realizing learning will remain stagnant without scaffolding, we are aware of the necessity of creating a healthy, safe environment.
MPFS One Book • Our PLP team is each reading a book suggested at the last Eluminate Session • We will pick one • Read for summer reading • Use as a guide for learning and teaching
Reflective Piece Make sure we aren’t losing a part of ourselves while we are picking up a skill. Reflect early and often
Looking to sharing more in May Thank you
Reality is Broken • We should seek to make many facets of our lives more game-like. "Compared with games, reality feels broken. It doesn't motivate us or inspire us as effectively and reliably as our best games do." Her solution is to 'gamify' the world. "Gamification means taking an ordinary task--running, losing weight--and adding a game layer to it, like points, levels, badges. It isn't about making real life easier. It's about making real life more challenging, in ways that we want.” McGonigal
