My Biases/Beliefs • Physical/Observable world • “Real world” exists apart from the self • Politically conservative & liberal • Nurture usually trumps Nature (But it’s the INTERACTION that’s interesting & important.)
My Issues • Difficulty remembering names • Teach five classes (150+ students) • Grading (Will be using some computer grading ) • Live 60 miles away
Approach to Teaching Psychology(Especially Intro Psych) • There are “Things” you must know: • Basic facts • Established beliefs • Latest views • Culturally important Names • There are “Processes” you must learn: • Tools for learning & critical thinking • BS sensor • Methods which define the Science of Psychology • Pop Psych filter It’s all about Acquiring Useful, “real world,” Knowledge.
My Approach toIntro Course • Minimal “busy work” • Emphasis on learning the important material • Frequent quizzes • Both a Midterm & a Final Exam • One Semester Project [Assigned after Midterm] • No “experimental subject” responsibilities • Observational exercises • Broad topically but deep enough to be useful • in your life • in your future academics
Class Mechanics • Regular attendance is expected • Attendance sampled • USD rules apply • See syllabus for schedule Actual schedule depends on weather, class dynamics, and quiz feedback.
Class Mechanics cont. • Testing • Weekly Quizzes • Midterm & Final • Weekly quiz • Quiz in first 15 minutes • Late and you miss it • Previous Chapter • No in class make-ups
Class Mechanics cont. • Make-up quizzes • Only for a GOOD reason work, illness, dependent illness, death in family, your death • Make-ups in my office • Several versions of each quiz • Chronic make-up behavior will not be supported ! • Make-up Midterm & Final • One make up administration • Must follow USD rules on Incompletes • You are adults. Adult behavior is expected.
Class Mechanics cont. • Grading formula • Project 2/8 points • Quizzes 3/8 points • Throw out high and low quiz (Up to 3) • Better sample • Matches course objectives • Midterm 1/8 points • Final 2/8 points • Class room contribution 1/8 points • Total 9/8 points • Grade calculated on best 8 points This approach may seem unusual but it works to your advantage!
Class Mechanics cont. • One Individual Semester Project • Submission Format • Word for report • PowerPoint for presentation • Prefer one person per project • Team projects • 3 persons max. • Must present to class • Must turn in PowerPoint & Document • Group project grade average of two
Initial Assignments #1 • Data recording experience • Block out a two hour period • Read Chapter 1 • Record the following data (see next page for format) • Page reached at end of 2 hours • Interruptions • Internal • External • Due Next class !
Initial Assignments #2 • Observational study • Described second half of class Period
Special Needs “If you have a disability for which you are, or may be, requesting an accommodation, you are encouraged to contact both your instructor and Elaine Pearson (605 677-6389) as early as possible in the semester.” If you have other kinds of special needs, please see me after class or during my office hours.
Final Comments • Class room discussion helps you learn • Sharing your experiences brings the material to life for everyone • You will learn to control • People • Pets • Yourself • You will learn how you are controlled There’s a lot of stuff but learning it can be fun.
