  9. Establishing A Top 5 How to be successful in creating and accomplishing goals for the workplace, and your personal life

Resolution • A firm decision to do or not to do something • Synonyms: intention, resolve, decision, intent, aim, plan • ~50% of Americans create a list of new year resolutions • More than half of these resolutions are work-related or can be applied at work • Only 8% of these resolutions are kept.

  12. Steps to Creating a Top 5 • Write a List • Pick your Top 5 • Align with Your Manager • Think Positively • Periodically Revisit

  13. 1. Write a List of Tasks • List out everything that you are doing • Don’t filter • Include projects, workgroups, presentations • Short-term, long-term • Include the important things on-going from last year

Examples Personal Work related • Lose Weight • Exercise more • Fall in love • Clean the bathroom • Go to dentist • Find a doctor • Mentor kids • Find a hobby • Fix the roof • Train the dog • Spend more time with family • Get a promotion • Make more money • Become a leader • Get organized • Find a mentor • Be the expert • Get a cube • Develop something • Learn more • Communicate with Asia counterpart

  15. 2. Pick Your Top 5 • Take the List of Tasks and pick your top priorities • If you have a couple more or less than 5, that’s ok. Just be realistic about what you have the bandwidth to drive actively • Revise the top 5 task into a set of goals or resolutions • Be specific • Outline what you are going to accomplish, in what time frame, and constitutes success, what are your mile markers • Be Honest • Don’t set goals that are unreasonable • Only to commit to what you can do

List  Top 5 Task from list Goal/resolution • Lose Weight • Communicate with Asia counterpart • Run for at least 30min 3xweek and track my daily calories so that I lose 1-2 lbs a week and meet my goal of 10lbs by March • Set-up bi-weekly 1:1’s, sign up for basic Chinese course at the CC next semester, summarize meetings with notes and keep email correspondence

Align with Your Manager • Evaluate your top 5 to make sure your goals align with the business imperatives • If you are in a technical position, and your manager is non-technical, review with your technical mentor • For your personal goals, talk with your spouse/parents/close-friend to help you evaluate whether these goals satisfy your personal/family values • Keep them in the loop • Provide support when you need it • Are aware of the progress you are making • Will be able to speak to your work and your accomplishments

Think Positively • Having a positive attitude about your resolutions will make the process fun and stress-free • Be flexible • Don’t get upset if you don’t meet every self-imposed deadline—the key is to be encouraged by the progress you’ve made thus far • Give yourself buffer time • Failure isn’t a bad thing • The key to success is knowing you have to fail multiple times before reaching a goal • Share what you are doing with co-workers, friends, and family • Gain new perspectives • Receive positive encouragement • Accountability

Periodically Revisit • Save the initial list of tasks • Add/and delete from the list as needed • Reevaluate the Top 5 • Changes in the workplace or at home can cause you to reevaluate these • Make sure any changes you make align with your business imperatives (if at home, align with your family and personal values) • Prioritize emergencies • Seek help • Align with your manager, mentor, and family
