Investigate The Truth about the CHURCH THAT CHRIST BUILT…. Part 14 --- THE N.T. Church and The Teaching On The INDWELLING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
In Our Last Study…. Holy Spirit Baptism Always A Promise ….--- NEVER A Command. • Matt. 3:11 --- "He shall baptize you...” • Mk. 1:8 --- "He shall baptize you with the H.S.” • Lk. 3:16 --- "He shall baptize you with the H.S.” • John 1:33 --- ".. the same is He which ... the H.S.” • Acts 1:5 --- "... ye shall be baptized with the H.S.” • Acts 11:16 --- "... ye shall be baptized with the H.S."
IN TONIGHTS LESSON WE WANT TO EXAMINE WHETHER THE GIFT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IS THE INDWELING OF THE SPIRIT • The ISSUE IS NOT: • Does the H.S. have a role in saving sinners. • Since scriptures says YES it does - Titus 3:5 ; Eph 1:13 etc. • Whether or not the H.S. dwells in the Christian today. • Since scriptures says Yes He does --- Rom. 8:9-11 ; I Cor. 3:16 ; 6:19 ; James 4:5 ; II Tim. 1:13-14 ; Eph 3:16 ; I Thess. 4:8. • To deny such is to deny the Scriptures and the power unto salvation.--- Rom. 1:16 ; II Tim. 1:14. • To deny the fact that the Christian is led, guided, and strengthened by the Holy Spirit is to deny the teachings of the Scriptures. • Whether or not the H.S. has been given to Christians --- Since Scriptures says He has --- Acts 5:32 ; Gal 4:6 ; Rom. 5:5 ; I John 3:24 ; 4:13.
IN TONIGHTS LESSON WE WANT TO EXAMINE WHETHER THE GIFT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IS THE INDWELING OF THE SPIRIT • Rather the ISSUE IS HOW DOES THE HOLY SPIRIT INDWELL??? • Does the Holy Spirit indwell the Christian today personally and literally in addition to the Word of God? • Does the Holy Spirit indwell the Christian today personally and literally separate and apart from the Word of God? • Does the Holy Spirit as a person immediately and without means enter into and inhabit the body of a Christian separate and apart from the influence of The Revealed Word? • If So!, what does He do for the Christian as a result of this bodily indwelling that is not said to be accomplished through the medium of His teaching in the revealed Word?
"Before we make claims about the indwelling of the Holy Spirit which would not parallel the indwelling of both the Father and the Son, we need to examine closely what is actually involved" Robert Harkrider • Let us note some primary verses that are often overlooked and ignored by the teaching of the Personal indwelling of the Holy Spirit. • GOD DWELLS IN US -- II Cor. 6:16 ; I John 4:4, 13, 16 ; Eph. 4:6 ; Phil. 2:13. • We Dwell in God --- I John 4:13, 15, 16 ; I Thess. 1:1. • CHRIST DWELLS IN US --- Rom. 8:10 ; I John 3:23-24 ; John 15:4-5 ; Gal 2:20 ; 4:19; Eph 3:17 ; Phil. 1:20 ; Col 3:11 ; John 6: 56 ; II Cor. 13:5. The mind of Christ is in the Christian --- Phil. 2:5. • We Dwell in Christ --- John 6:56 ; 15:4-7 ; Col. 2:6-7 ; Gal. 3:27 ; II Cor. 5:17.
"Before we make claims about the indwelling of the Holy Spirit which would not parallel the indwelling of both the Father and the Son, we need to examine closely what is actually involved" Robert Harkrider • FATHER DWELLS IN SON/SON DWELLS IN THE FATHER --- John 4:10 ; 17:20-21. • THE SPIRIT DWELLS IN US - Rom. 8:9-11 ; I Cor. 3:16 ; 6:19 ; James 4:5 ; II Tim. 1:13,14; Eph. 3:16 ; I Thess. 4:8. • We Dwell in the Holy Spirit --- Gal. 5:16,25. • There is also the INDWELLING IN: • Sin --- Romans 7:17. • Love --- I John 3:17. • Word of God --- Col. 3:16. • Truth --- John 15:7 ; I John 2:14 ; II John 2 ; III John 3 ; II Tim. 1:5. • Note we abide in Truth also --- John 8:31 ; I Cor. 15:1 ; II John 4 ; II John 4. • The fact that must be respected here is that whatever one claims of one he must also claim of all the others.
"DWELL" DOES NOT NECESSITATE A LITERAL INDWELLING OF THE PERSON. • Another problem that is quickly overlooked is the subject of INCARNATION: • Simply stated this is when Deity personally and literally dwells in the flesh ---- Col 2:9 ; I Tim. 3:16 ; John 1:1 ,14. • If Deity dwells in our flesh, literally and personally, how is our flesh any different from that of Christ??? • Naturally one must concluded that such a conclusion would promote and elevate man to a place which he does not occupy!!! • It is natural to see why it is so important to understand the difference between the presence of God and the Personage of God.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE PERSONAGE AND THE PRESENCE OF GOD • Firstly we must all agree that the H.S. is a "Person" of Divine Nature. • The H.S. is a member of the Godhead. • Three were present at the beginning --- Gen. 1;1-2. • This plurality is seen in the word "our" in Gen 1:26 cf. John 1:1-3. • Father, Son and the H.S. are all persons of the Godhead. • Baptism is administered in the name of all three --- Matt 28:18-20. • Peter preached about all three --- Acts 10:38. • Paul wrote about all three --- Eph.2:13,18 ; Rom 15:30 ; II Cor. 13:14. • They are three persons but are One in agreement, purpose and action: • I John 5:7.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE PERSONAGE AND THE PRESENCE OF GOD • Secondly we must acknowledge the fact that the H.S. is God but not the Son nor the Father: • I John 4:14 --- Father is not the Son. • John 15:26 --- Son not the H.S. and the Father not the H.S. • "Since each are persons they require individuality, which in turn requires locality which necessitates separation and distinction". --- Robert Harkrider pg. 22. • Let us now note where Deity is placed according to the scriptures: • God the Father is seated as a Divine Person on His throne in Heaven -- Rev. 4:3-4 ; 7:10. • Jesus Christ as God's Son, as a Divine Person is seated at the right hand of the Majesty on High --- Heb. 1:3 ; 8:1 ; 12:2. • The Holy Spirit, as a Divine Person is standing before the throne of God --- Rev. 1:4 ; 4:5. • With this in mind that the fact still remains that God the Father, The Son and the Holy Spirit is said to dwell in us.
The "presence of God" is found in many places in scripture, where "His Person" is not. • Although the presence of God may be found in different places His Divine Being is in Heaven. • This is accomplished through the use of various agents or mediums. • Let us note some examples of God's Presence but not His Person: • God called unto Moses in the midst of a burning bush --- Exo 3:4. • Yet this was done through an angel --- vrs. 2. • The Lord saved the Israelites out of the Hand of the Egyptians - Ex. 14:30. • Once again it was accomplished through the angel of His presence ---- Isa. 63:9. • The Lord went before Israel in a pillar of Cloud and fire --Ex. 13:21. • Once again the angel of God actually did this --- Ex. 14:19 ; 33:14 ; 23:20-25. • Christ promised to be with His Disciples when they gather in His name: • Matt 18:20. • Yet we understand that Christ is at the Right Hand of God -- Heb. 4:14-16 ; I Peter 3:22. • IF GOD AND THE SON CAN BE PRESENT THROUGH THE INSTRUMENTALITY OF THEIR AGENTS WITHOUT BEING PRESENT IN PERSON, WHY CANNOT THE HOLY SPIRIT ALSO BE?”
AVOIDING THE SUPERNATURAL ACTION OF THE H.S. TODAY. • When the H.S. acted apart from the Word of God, it was always Supernaturally. • WHY PERSONAL INDWELLING??? • To Enable man to understand the Scripture --- Art. 1 # 6. • To make him willing (able) to believe ---- Art. 7 # 3. • To enable him to resist sin --- Art. 15 # 2-3. • To make him conscious of his sins --- Art. 15 # 3. • Enable him to do good works --- Art. 16 # 3. • From Philadelphia Conf. of Faith. • PENTECOSTALISM: • Includes in this list --- Gives "inner light" --- I Cor. 2:12-13. • From Westminster Conf. of Faith.
HOW DOES THE SPIRIT DWELL IN US? • GOD dwells in us. (2 Cor.6:16; Col.3:16; I Jn.4:15) • CHRIST dwells in us. (Eph.3:17; Col.3:16) • Both dwell in us THROUGH the word. (2 Jn.9; Gal.3:2) • Neither dwells in us personally. God is in heaven and Christ is at the right hand of God. (Acts 2:33) • The Holy Spirit through the Word represents God and Christ on earth. (Matt.10:40; Lk.10:16; I Thess.2:13) • When the Holy Spirit dwells in Christians, God and Christ dwell in them also. (I Cor.3:16,17; Jas.4:5) • The Spirit speaks through the written word. (Rev.2:1,29)
HOW DOES THE SPIRIT DWELL IN US? • The FATHER, the SON and the HOLY SPIRIT, ALL, dwell in the people of God. (Eph.2:20-22) • God, Christ and the Holy Spiritdwell in us through the word. (Jn.16:13-15; 2 Pet.1:3; 2 Tim.3:16) • The Holy Spiritdwells in Christians in exactly the same way that the Father and the Son dwell in them - that is, THROUGH THE WORD. (Rom.8:11; Gal.2:20; Eph.3:17; Col.1:27; 2 Cor.6:16) ONE IS NO MORE MIRACULOUS NOR MYSTERIOUS THAN THE OTHERS.
HOW DOES THE SPIRIT DWELL IN US? • THE INDWELLING OF THE SPIRIT • The Word of God is the sword of the Spirit, and the theory that the Spirit operates independently of the Word is erroneous. • (Eph.6:17) The Spirit does not CONVICT, or GUIDE, or REVEAL, or DWELL IN, or OPERATE in any way, except THROUGH THE WORD. (Eph.5:18,19; Col.3:16) The indwelling FATHER, SON, and SPIRIT, all three, dwell in the same PLACE. (Eph.2:20-22; 2 Jn.9) They all dwell in the HEART where the word of Christ dwells richly.
In Conclusion …. • IF THE GIFT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IS THE LITERAL PERSONAL INDWELLING OF THE SPIRIT THEN: • There no longer is a need to teach Christians, since the H.S. has full control. • No need to be concerned about Apostasy. • If Apostasy does occur, then God is held responsible. • Man is therefore passive about his salvation. • Changes the source of authority: • Feel that the H.S. wants me to do this. • H.S. will teach me how to understand the Bible etc. • The Word of God is not "all Sufficient".
