Terms and concepts • Mortality rate: A measure of the number of deaths in a given population • Millennium Development Goals: Eight international development goals set by the United Nations to achieve targets to significantly and measurably improve people’s lives by 2015. They include reducing child mortality rates, fighting disease epidemics, and eradicating extreme poverty.
Contraceptives: Techniques and methods used to prevent pregnancy. • Abortion: The termination of a pregnancy before it comes to term naturally by the removal or expulsion of a fetus or embryo from the uterus, resulting in or caused by its death. • Prenatal care: The medical and nursing care recommended for women before and during pregnancy. • Maternal death: death from pregnancy-related causes within one year of giving birth.
Midwife: A healthcare provider who offers care to childbearing women during their pregnancy, labour and birth, and during the postpartum period. They also care for the newborn through to ten days of age, including assisting the mother with breastfeeding. • Neonatal death: When a baby dies in the first 28 days of life. • Family planning: planning when to have children and the use of birth control and other techniques to implement such plans. • Patriarchal: Run by men and based on the principle of male dominance.
