  4. Small Pox • Transmitted from person to person • Symptoms show 10 – 14 days after infected • Isolation and vaccination • Scars and blindness AE

  5. The Black Death • Europe and Asia in mid 1300s • Healthy people fled sick • Bubonic Plague • Also affected sheep AE

  6. The Black Death • 20 milliondied (1/3 European population) • Black sores, bleeding and pus • Transmitted by person to person • Yersinia pestis AE

  7. Leprosy • Founded in Hawaii • 1873, identified by Dr. Hansen • 1/10,00 people died • Hansen's disease  LL

  8. Leprosy • Slow-growing bacteria • Patches of skin with decreased sensitivity  • Numbness in the hands, feet, legs, and arms • Two antibiotics  LL

  9. Typhoid Fever • Spread by contaminated food and water  • High fevers, stomach pains, headache, and loss of appetite  • Associated with a fever caused by the Salmonella • Antibiotics improve health in 1-2 days  LL

  10. Mary Mallon  • Irish cook • Salmonella carrier • First infected by typhoid fever • Infected 51 people, 3 died  • Lived in a hospital, died from pneumonia at 69 LL
