Remote Desktop • Administrative feature enabling users to access computers from remote locations with no interaction required from the remote site • Usually used for administrators to connect to servers that are not easily accessible • Uses an implementation of Remote Desktop Services from Windows Server

  21. Using Startup and Recovery Dialog Box • Provides basic controls that enable you to configure the startup process by modifying the BCD registry file • Start -> Control Panel -> System and Security -> System. Click Advanced System Settings. Click the Advanced tab, as shown in Figure 11-1

Using the System Configuration Tool • Start -> Run -> type: msconfig • General • To suppress specific parts of the startup process • Boot • Controls BCD registry settings that enable you to select the operating system to install and configure a limited boot sequence • Services • Enables you to select the services that will run during the startup sequence • Startup • Enables you to select the startup applications that will run during the startup sequence • Tools • To launch Windows 7 configuration and troubleshooting tools

  23. Enable Boot Logging • Gathers information about the most recent startup process and saves it to a text file for later examination • To enable: • When the POST completes, press the F8 key repeatedly until the Advanced Boot Options menu appears. • Select Enable Boot Logging

  24. Using Windows RE • Allows you to bypass all of the drivers, applications, and services that can be the source of a startup problem • To run: Boot with installation DVD, click Repair Your Computer when prompted

Using the System Recovery Tools • Startup Repair • An automated troubleshooting tool that is capable of diagnosing and repairing a variety of problems that can prevent Windows 7 from starting, including BCD problems and missing startup files • System Restore • System Image Recovery • Enables you to perform a FULL restoration of your computer, using an image you previously created with the Backup and Restore control panel • Windows Memory Diagnostic tool • Command Prompt

  30. Creating a System Repair Disk • Enables you to access system recovery options if you do not have a Windows 7 installation disk or a recovery partition • Bootable disk • Contains recovery tools

Restoring Previous Versions • Volume shadow copies • Duplicates of files that Windows creates as part of a restore point • System Protection feature is required • Restore one of the previous versions by opening its Properties dialog box (or that of its parent) and clicking the Previous Versions tab
