The reason such nouns take these articles is that it would be difficult to pronounce the two vowels -la a, una a- together.
Despite taking the masculine article the nouns are still feminine and therefore the plural articles are used in the feminine form, unas and las respectively. • las aguas las águilas las áreas • las armas las hachas las alas
