Builds in intensity and in violence- so author uses both rhythm and degree of violence to build intensity?
Step 4 • Begin formulating your answer • On page 216, Lily describes Zack’s conversations “about the race riots in New Jersey, policemen taking their nightsticks to Negro boys who threw rocks, about Molotov cocktails, sit-ins, righteous causes, Malcolm X, and the Afro-American Unity group giving the Ku Klux Klan a taste of their own medicine.” While reading, the words actually seem to become faster through the author’s manipulation of rhythm. From long descriptions at first, to short choppy words, and then back to long and descriptive; the building seems similar to that of a heart that begins beating slowly and eventually starts pounding. Making the impact even stronger, is the degree of violence that also grows stronger from beginning to end.
Step 5:Add something specialWhat makes this specific passage significant? • These two techniques allow Kidd to create a very intense image of the motivation that must have been building in the African-American community at this pivotal turning point in history. • THAT- IS WHAT SEPARATES A GOOD ANSWER… • FROM….. • A BRILLIANT ONE!!!!
