  3. Blood Pressure Monitoring • BP = Cardiac Output x Vascular Resistance • Cardiac Output is the volume of blood ejected by the heart in one minute(litre per min) • Cardiac Output = Stroke Volume x Rate

  4. Blood Pressure Monitoring con • Vascular resistance is determined by the diameter and elasticity of blood vessels

  5. Blood Pressure Control • Chemical mediators affect vessel diameter and therefore blood pressure. • Name some of these??

  6. Blood Pressure • Systolic blood pressure reflects maximal pressure in the vessels following ventricular ejection(Systole) • Diastolic blood pressure represents minimal pressure in the vessels following ventricular resting(Diastole)

  7. Mean Arterial Pressure • Mean arterial blood pressure(MABP) is the average pressure in the arteries, roughly 1/3rd of the way between the diastolic and systolic pressures. • MABP is the most sensitive indicator in the critically ill

  8. Mean Arterial Pressure • MAP = Diastolic x2 + systolic • 3 • Pulse Pressure = the difference between the systolic and diastolic
