Introduction • The X-Men are a team of comic book superheroes in the Marvel Comics universe • Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, they debuted in September 1963 • The year 2000 saw the debut of following series X-Men: Evolution and the long-awaited X-Men movie directed by Bryan Singer • Its sequel X2 was released in 2003 and became the sixth highest grossing film of the year. A third X-Men movie is scheduled for release in May of 2006
Part I. Marvel • Marvel Comics is an American comic book company created in 1939 • Since the 1960s, it has been one of the two largest American comics companies, along with DC Comics • Editor/writer Stan Lee and freelance artist Jack Kirby createdthe family the Fantastic Four in the 1960s • With Kirby, Lee created the Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, the Mighty Thor and the X-Men • With Bill Everett, Daredevil; and with Steve Ditko, Doctor Strange and Marvel's most successful character, Spider-Man • Several of Marvel properties have been licensed to become hit movies, most notably X-Men and Spider-Man
Part I. Marvel Nowadays, Marvel remains a key publisher in the comics business, even as the industry has dwindled to a fraction of its peak size decades earlier
Professor X has been compared to African American civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. and Magneto to the more militant Malcolm X. The X-Men’s purpose is sometimes referred to achieving "Xavier’s dream" perhaps a reference to King’s historic "I Have a Dream" speech
Part II. The story • The X-Men are mutants who, through a sudden leap in evolution, are born with latent superhuman abilities • The X-Men were founded by the paraplegic telepath Professor Charles Francis Xavier, a.k.a. Professor X • Xavier gathered the X-Men under the cover of Professor Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters in Salem Center, a city in Westchester County, New York • In the academy, he trains young mutants to protect themselves and the world from Magneto and other menacing threats
Part III. The characters • The original X-Men consisted of five teenagers learning to control their powers: Cyclops/Scott Summers, Marvel Girl/Jean Grey, Angel/Warren Worthington, Beast/Hank McCoy and Iceman/Bobby Drake • In Giant-Size X-Men #1 (1975), the new group consisted of adults from a variety of nations • Led by Cyclops, the new team consisted of Thunderbird/John Proudstar, Colossus/Piotr Rasputin, Nightcrawler/Kurt Wagner, Storm/Ororo Munroe, Sunfire/Shiro Yashida, Banshee/Sean Cassidy and most notably the previously introduced Wolverine/Logan
Founder, mentor and sometime leader of the X-Men. Xavier can read, control and influence human minds and cast illusions. He can also detect the presence of other mutants. rendered a paraplegic in an accident caused by an alien called Lucifer
Magneto, a Holocaust survivor sees the situation of mutants as similar to those of Jews in Nazi Germany.Magneto's primary power is magnetism
Phoenix aka Jean Grey (Marvel Girl). Her lover: Scott Summers (Cyclops); also attracted to Logan.Phoenix is a mutant born with the abilities of telepathy and telekinesis. As Phoenix, Jean's psi-powers became stronger
Power to control the weather, including lightning, rain, snow and wind, which she primarily uses to make herself and others fly.
Wolverine/Logan. Possesses animal-like senses and reflexes and has three forearm-length claws on each hand.
Relationship with Marvel Girl culminating in her tragic death as she tried to pilot a space shuttle through a solar flare, her rebirth as Phoenix and her suicide on the Moon. Power to project beams of pure solar energy from his eyes
Conclusion • In 2000, 20th Century Fox released X-Men, a $75 million film adaptation of the comic, directed by Bryan Singer • The film gathered approval from fans and enough good reviews to begin a revival of superhero-themed movies • In 2003, the sequel X2: X-Men United also directed by Singer, was released • In 2006, a third movie X-Men 3 directed by Brett Ratner will be released
