Peripheral Nervous System • Nerves that connect the CNS to the rest of the body • Schwann Cells • Forms segmented covering around axon • Neurons • Sensory • Motor
Sensory & Motor Neurons • Motor neurons- carry signals from the CNS to the outer parts of your body • Ex: (muscles, skin, glands) • Sensory neurons-carry signals from the outer parts of your body into the CNS
SOMATIC NERVOUS system • Voluntary • Made up of nerves that are connected to skin, muscles, and sensory organs • Controls skeletal muscles ex: muscle movement
Autonomic Nervous System • Involuntary • Motor nervous system • Unconscious processes that maintain homeostasis • Controls/Regulates glands, blood vessels, internal organs and smooth muscle
Reflex arc • Stimulus detected • Info through sensory neuron transmits receptor to spinal cord • Received at integration center, message then sent outward • Impulse from spinal cord to peripheral region • Effector receives impulse lead to reflex • Somatic: the effector is skeletal muscle • Autonomic: effector is smooth muscle or cardiac muscle or visceral organs
Reflex Arc • A reflex is a rapid involuntary response to stimulus • It is a pathway traveled by the nerve impulse during the reflex • Involuntary
Autonomic Reflex Example • Baroreflex • Blood Pressure • Nerve transmission from baroreceptor to medulla initiate it • Vasoconstriction or vasodilation
Neurotransmitters • A chemical message passed on from one neuron to another
Receptors • What receives the neurotransmitters and accepts them • 2 receptors for ACH • NictonicACh receptors- found in pre and post ganglia PNS • Muscarinic ACh receptors- found at post ganglia in PNS • 4 receptors for Norepinephrine • Androgenic receptros • are found postsynaptically in target tissue where postganglionic sympathetic neurons terminate.
Ganglion • Ganglion • Mass of neuron cell bodies • Outside of CNS • Pre-ganglionic fibers • Messages from CNS (spinal cord) to ganglion • ACH • Post-ganglionic fibers • Sends message from ganglion to targeted organ
Ramus • White vs. Gray Ramus • White Ramus • Preganglionic sympathetic outflow • Gray Ramus • Short nerve containing postganglionic axons returning to spinal nerve
Termination • NT binds to receptor • Must be removed • Happens through one or more processes • NT diffusion by breaking down • NT deactivated by enzymes • NT back into presynaptic axon terminal
