  3. Effective communication of official statistics • conversation/dialogue through data between users and statisticians • common, spoken, everyday language • interpretation of the data in a broad sense

  4. Media – transmitters of the information • interested in phenomena in the society • not satisfied with raw data and “flat commentaries” • searching for broader meaning of data given by expert analysts

  5. New communication policy in Statistics Slovenia • regular monthly press conferences • additional thematic press conferences: • presentation of phenomena by data of many statistical surveys • invited guests: academic professionals, expert analysts, policy-makers

  6. Thematic press conferences Five press conferences in the last nine months, topics: • ageing of the population as forecast by projections • environmental statistics concerning the changing climate • sustainable development • young people • gender statistics

Press conference: Ageing of the population as forecast by projections • presentation of data of population projections by a statistician • presentation of the demographic situation in Slovenia and the future development given by an academic professor • analysis of general government expenditure as a result of demographic forecasts given by an expert analyst of the Governmental Institute of Macroeconomic Development and Analysis

Experiences of joint presentation a/good experiences: more interesting for the media, broader coverage by several media, increase in the confidence in official statistics, promotion of official statistics b/ unpleasant experience: possible attracting of criticism of official statistics by invited guests
