What are linking words? • Are words that help you to connect ideas and sentences, so that people can follow your ideas
Why are they important? • Linking words play an important part in speaking and writing. They signal to the reader the direction the speaker/ writer is taking.
Linking words can be used to: • Link the flow of ideas in your writing • Guide the reader towards the next stage of the argument • Link paragraphs together
Linking words can be used for the following purposes: • To list points • To add more points • To give examples/ reasons • To introduce the opposing viewpoint • To conclude
To list points: • To begin with • To start with • Lastly • Firstly • Finally
To add more points: • Furthermore • In addition • What is more • Moreover • Also
To give examples/ reasons: • Therefore • For instance • Because • Then • In this way • This would mean that • Such as • Consequently • As a result • For example • Since
To introduce the opposing viewpoint: • Whilst • Nevertheless • On the other hand • However
To conclude: • All in all • To sum up • All things considered
TASK Look at the two extracts from letters of opinion below and fill in the gaps with the words/ phrases in the list: That way; In my opinion; Firstly; I think; There’s no point; As a result
