Body Mass Index (BMI) • Is a simple index of weight-for-height that is commonly used to classify • underweight, overweight and obesity in adults. • According to BMI, obesity has three grades: • Grade I: BMI = 30 kg / m² – 34.9 kg / m²; • Grade II: BMI = 35 kg / m² – 39.9 kg / m²; • Grade III: BMI > 40 kg / m².
Waist to Hip Ratio • Waist to hip ratio is a simple measure of where fat is stored in your body. • Most people store their body fat in two places • Around their waist • Around their hips. • Less than 35 inches for women • Less than 40 inches for men • Storing extra weight around your waist (apple shaped) puts a person at a higher health risk than someone carrying extra weight around their hips and thighs (pear shaped).
Overweight women at greater risk of miscarriage Overweight women are at greater risk of miscarrying a perfectly healthy baby than those who are an acceptable weight, a new study has found. • Being overweight or obese is a major complicating factor in conceiving, carrying a child and birth and babies are more likely to suffer problems and birth defects. • The latest study carried out by Stanford University School of Medicine in California found 53 per cent of foetuses miscarried by overweight women were normal compared with 37 per cent of babies that were miscarried by women of a healthy weight. • Dr Mark Hamilton, chairman of the British Fertility Society, said: "It is recognised that women who are overweight are at a greater risk of miscarriage.

Eventually, an area of plaque can rupture, causing a blood clot to form. • If the clot is close to your brain, it can block the flow of blood and oxygen to your brain and cause a stroke. The risk of having a stroke rises as BMI increases.
