  1. Final WorkshopSeptember 20, 2012Anchorage, Alaska

  2. NSDSS Final Workshop - Agenda • Introductions • 1:00 – 1:45 Project Overview and Tool Functionality • 1:45 – 2:30 Case Study #1 – White Hills Ice Road • 2:30 – 2:45 Coffee Break • 2:45 – 3:15 Ice Road Design, Live Demo • 3:15 – 3:45 Case Study #2 – Landscape Ice Road Suitability Assessment • 3:45 – 4:00 Stakeholder Feedback • 4:00 End

  3. Ice Roads are Critical for Resource Exploration in the Arctic… • Relatively Inexpensive • Relatively Reliable • Require Little Remediation

  4. Distribution of NorthSlope Lakes

  5. Question: • How can we do a better job of Planning, Permitting, and Communicating Information about Ice Roads on Alaska’s North Slope? • Answer: • The North Slope Decision Support System

  6. Stakeholder Workshops • First Workshop: Anchorage, Jan. 2009 • Introduce project • Brainstorm Functionality of NSDSS • Second Workshop: Fairbanks, Nov. 2009 • Reviewed Prototype NSDSS Tool • Feedback on Functionality • Third Workshop: Fairbanks, April, 2011 • Rolled out Working NSDSS Web Tool • Brainstormed Case Study Ideas • Final Workshop: Fairbanks & Anchorage, Sept. 2012 • Presenting Completed Tool • Presenting Case Study Results • Brainstorm future enhancements

  7. NSDSS Today: NSDSS Website • Nsdss.ine.uaf.edu • Project Overview • Description • Team • Stakeholders • Contact • Literature • Overview • Ice Road Planning • Natural Systems Models • Technology • Workshops • Case Studies • Web Tool • Tool requirements • Launching Pad

  8. North Slope DSS Web Portal GIS-based NSDSS System Architecture Cyber Infrastructure Data, Tools, Reports Catalog Service Metadata for all Databases Model Data: Publish Field Data: WERC, Publish (ODM-based) GIS Data (WMS, WFS) Climate Forecasts ReAnalysis (NetCDF) Local Cache Combination of new and Existing Databases, owned by data partners

  9. The NSDSS Web Tool: NSDSS.net Search for all data within the NSDSS Cyberinfrastructure Uses Semantic Mediation

  10. NSDSS.net • MS Silverlight-based web application • Enables exploration of data, analysis, and publication of findings • Data stored in statewide cyber infrastructure, and is accessed directly through the web portal through web services • Map-based application containing four modules that interact with map: • Data Exploration • Data Publishing • Environmental Analysis • Ice Road Planning

  11. 1 Intent is to Evaluate Potential Ice Road Route(s) 2 NorthSlopeDSS Workbench GIS-based Desktop Tool Decide to do Ice Road Planning Study; select start and end point 4 Catalog Service provides names and call methods and parameters for Nodes 5 Workbench Requests Data 7 User Conducts Analysis and documents findings 6 Node Serves Data 8 User Completes Evaluation Report 9 User saves findings and brings into decision process. An example of how it Works? Ask Catalog Service for Data Nodes that contain suitable data (Terrain, GIS – Lakes, Sensitive Areas) CyberInfrastructure Data, Tools, Reports 3 Catalog Service Metadata for all information Field Data GINA GIS Node Local Cache Climate Data

  12. NorthSlopeDSS Workbench GIS-based Desktop Tool NSDSS Data Sources CyberInfrastructure Catalog Service Metadata for all Databases WERC Field Data (ODM-based) NSDSS NetCDF -GCM Climate Scenarios -Re-Analysis Local Cache Data Models NSDSS ArcGIS -Lakes DB -Transportation -Hydrography -DEM NSF Data Conservancy/ EOL Endangered Species Service NSDSS Model Database (xml-based model descriptions) ESRI World Map (ODM-based) NSDSS Publish Database (ODM-based) External Read-Only Publishable

  13. NSDSS Web Tool: Data Publishing • Add your own data • Point-based • Meteorological Data • Hydrologic Data • Any Data Can be published • Copy and Paste from Excel • Upload to Publish Database • Can be used by others in their analysis

  14. NSDSS Web Tool: Ice Road Planning • Ice Road Planning • Planning Level Assessment to Determine Potential Ice Road Routes based on: • Cost • Length • Construction Time • Water Haul Distance • Grade • Water Availability • Environmental Impact • Advanced Analyses: • Find best place to start from along road • Landscape Iceroad Suitability Analysis

  15. NSDSS Web Tool: Environmental Analysis • Used to Assess Environmental Impact and Risk • Lake Water Budget Analysis • Potential impact to lake water supply given uncertain weather • Takes into account fish presence and regulatory requirement 5% of models predict this much water will be available Because min level for blue line is higher than 55M gal, shows that 50% of models agree that there will be sufficient water, even in dry years. 50% of models predict this much water will be available Water Required to build road Because red line crosses 55M gal at 65%, shows that 5% of models predict there will be a 65% chance of insufficient water. 95% of models predict this much water will be available

  16. NSDSS Web Tool: Environmental Analysis • Used to Assess Environmental Impact and Risk • Lake Dissolved Oxygen Analysis • Potential impact to lake water quality given uncertain weather • Takes into account impact of thickening ice and extraction of water’s impact to total liquid lake volume and resulting DO level.
