Common Tools used in Wartime Propaganda • Demonization – seeing the enemy as evil and aggressive
Emotional Appeals – playing on people’s emotions (i.e. fear)
Patriotic Appeals – appeals to people’s pride in their nations by using national symbols
Catchy Slogans – Use of Memorable phrases (i.e. “Remember the Alamo”)
Evocative Symbols – Appeal to people’s emotions such as flags, mothers and children, enemy uniforms.
Humor or Caricatures – captures the viewer’s attention by making the enemy the butt of the joke
The U.S. wasn’t alone. Other countries did it, too, like France This is an ad for bonds. Emprunt National is the name of a bank. “We Got ‘Em” or “We’re Getting them!”
And Germany, too! “Join the Brave Swabian soldiers in the Iron of Stuttgart!” (Stuttgart is a city in Germany.) “Follow us!”
