Nirvana Seeing the world as it really is
It is not … A place Somewhere you go when you die Heaven It is … An attitude Freedom from greed, hatred and delusion Seeing the world as it really is Freedom from rebirth What is nirvana?
Nirvana • Most people experience dukkha because they do not understand a situation, or want the world to be different to how it is. • Someone who has attained nirvana can: • See the world clearly – they see it as it is, rather than as they want it to be • Accept the world as it is, without wanting things to be different • As a result they do not experience dukkha. • When they die they will not be reborn, because they do not crave other things.
How do you achieve nirvana? • Buddhists believe that nirvana is achieved when: • You understand the world around you • You accept the world as it is without trying to change it • You can develop these attitudes by: • Following the middle-way and the Eightfold Path • Studying Buddhists texts • Meditating to develop your awareness
Why is nirvana important? • It offers hope that dukkha can be stopped • It gives people something to aim for • It provides a motivation for behaving in a moral way • It helps to provide an answer for the problem of evil
