  2. History Can be dated back to settlement in North America from European countries A man who was unable to find a wife sent out for one across seas through a middleman Common to be married in an arranged fashion, without knowing your partner

  3. History International relationships were rarely seen Korean men working in America sought out wives through “picture-bride system” Pictures of available women were sent prior to marriage to see if suitable Typically arranged by village matchmakers upon request of groom Women’s family receives stipend for loss of labor

  4. Today International relationships allowed and sought after Women must provide photos, measurements, personality traits, and what she seeks in a husband Fees applied to the ordering of catalogs with this information, or based on how many women you want to contact Companies set up “bridal tours” for the man seeking a woman to go to her home country

  5. Today Russia is notorious for “mail-order brides”, but this is not the only country Some Internet agencies are scams Sometimes used by women to escape extreme poverty Video: http://www.howcast.com/videos/8476-How-to-Get-a-MailOrder-Bride

  6. Social Discrepancies International adoptions have been regarded as “saving a child’s life.” International marriages are regarded as “buying a Wife.”

  7. International Affairs Many scandals can occur, since some of the marriages can be quiet expensive. Also it is very dangerous for those involved. For example, Anastasia King, a young woman from Kyrgyzstan, was found strangled and buried in a shallow grave in Washington state in December 2000. Other reports state individuals who have been placed in exile and forced into sexual slavery.

  8. Debates Often criticized for putting money over marriage, faithfulness, and love. Reports show that around 80% of mail-order brides in America have remained married over the years, which is higher than the normal marriage rate. The USCIS also reports that “… mail-order bride and e-mail correspondence services result in 4,000 to 6,000 marriages between U.S. men and foreign brides each year.” Still many other countries have deemed mail order brides, “immoral immigrations.”

  9. Political Issues International laws may be an issue It may be legal in one country in the deal, but illegal in the other However, this usually ensures women have legal documentation Avoids illegal immigration

  10. Ethical Implications Becoming socially acceptable However, industry is largely unregulated and unmonitored Trafficking can be an issue associated with mail-order brides, but laws are in place to aid Domestic violence can occur

  11. Ethical Implications Women sometimes have little say in their marital status Women can feel trapped into this deal, having to escape poverty and willing to be unhappy to do so Stereotypes regarding women in these situations arise
