  3. Social Construction of Gender • Alpha bias: exaggerate differences • Beta bias: ignore differences • Predominant view is alpha bias • Results in over interpreting differences between men and women • Minimizing differences within groups- e.g., between women

  4. Gender Aware Therapy • Feminist therapy not applicable to men • Gender role socialization harmful to men’s mental health • Sex-biological status • Gender- way one perceives and expresses being male or female • GAT highlights influence of socialization and male and female role expectations

  5. Feminist Therapy • Sociocultural conditions primary source of women’s problems • The personal is political-political solutions necessary to solve individual problems • Client/counselor relationship is egalitarian • Goals include self-determination and economic independence

  6. Gender and Career Counseling • Roles played over life • Meaning attached to gender • Compliance with gender roles and expectations • Monitor own (counselor’s) reactions • Develop hypotheses about gender’s influence • Evaluate conceptualizations for stereotypic assumptions
