Vocabulary • Using the word that Mrs. Purves gives you, find the sentence in the story that contains that word and write it down. • Look up definition of the word you are given by Mrs. Purves • Make sure that the definition you find is the appropriate one for the context in which the word is used in the story.

Vocabulary • Artisans: artist that create a specific type of craft • Marriage Portion: property which is given to a woman on her marriage • Gallantries: heroic bravery • Inscrutable: impossible to understand or interpret • Petulantly: rudely • Big: famous • Usurers: a person who lends money at unreasonable high rates of interest • Abject: extremely or excessively humble • Superimpose: to place over something else
