  1. Blog : Cotsiscad.com GUIDELINES FOR PATENT DRAWINGS A patent drawing is one of the major components of a patent application. Professional drawings assist you completely in order to explain the invention in every permutation. Moreover detailed patent drawings can protect you, if the key feature was unintentionally not mentioned into the written disclosure when filing an application. In fact, the USPTO often observes the drawings to verify what was disclosed during the time when the application was filed. There are several components that need to be covered while creating patent drawings that will be considered by the inventor, patent attorney, and ultimately the USPTO to find the application and the invention comprehensible, reasonable, and aesthetically satisfying. A patent drawing must be exact, reflecting the structure, surface finish, and the material of the subject. In order to highlight its invention and its novelty, it is required to draw many views when needed, i.e. left and right side, front, rear, top and bottom and so on. Moreover, it is suggested that the perspective view submitted should show the exact appearance and shape of the three dimensional design. The drawings ought to be done in black and white, unless colour is enquired to highlight specifics of the idea or invention. When the drawing is condensed to size in two-thirds in reproductions, it is required that the scale should be large enough to display the mechanism without crowding. Patent drafting must to be done on the best paper which is strong and non-glossy. It is expected that all the sheets must be free from folds, wrinkles and cracks. Only one side of the sheet should be utilized for the drawing. Every sheet must be free from deletions and free from alterations, interlineations and over writings. This is the reason it is best to hire an expert draftsman to do this work as it can be hard to accomplish for individuals who are not experienced with scaled drawings, different views and patent office guidelines.
