  4. Census History • Malawi Government has conducted 5 post independence censuses every 10 years. 1966, 1977 , 1987, 1998, 2008

  5. Currently • 2008 Census Preliminary Results 13.1m from 9.9m in 1998 • Process of preparations for Final Census Report in June 2008

Preparatory Activities-cont’ • Cartographic Work • All the EA maps were digitized through a Mapping exercise that started in 2003 was completed by 2006. • All the Stakeholders were involved in the development of on census questionnaires • Questionnaire Pretesting—June 2007 • Pilot Census • This was conducted in September 2007 • Ten districts were selected purposively and 10 Enumeration Areas were selected from each district

Preparatory activities cont’d • Advocacy Workshops • with stakeholders, civil societies, NGOs, district Assembly staff—in all regions and districts • Different media channels such as radios, newspapers, bill boards, posters were also used • Printing of Census questionnaire • Scanned questionnaire • Supplied by DRS company

  9. Census Activities Cont’ • Recruitment • Senior Supervisors were drawn from Government ministries and departments; these included. National, Regional, district, control centre Supervisors • Some control supervisors, field supervisors and enumerators were recruited from the open market • Trainings • These were done within the districts in cascaded manner • The NSO senior staff trained the District supervisors. • The District sup. trained control centre supervisors • The control centre sup. trained the field supervisors and enumerators

  13. Data Processing • Adopted Scanning method—DRS Data Service-OMR • 4million scannable questionnaires • 2 months of scanning

  14. Census Dissemination Strartegy • National, Regional, District Workshops • Plan to conduct census dissemination in all the districts and as lower as Traditional Authority • Including Population Indicators in the MASEDA.

  15. Strengths • Strong Political support by both Government and Development partners/donors • Strong financial support for the Census especially GOM • Very strong advocacy program because there was an advocacy framework that included formation of committees at district and national levels • Good cooperation from the general public

  16. Challenges • Coping with the changes in census enumeration dates • Delays in supply of some census field materials. • Collection of Census materials from the district • Finalisation of data cleaning and writing oof final Census Report.
