General Background • Majority of debates over religion stem from "establishment" or "religion" clause of First Amendment. • U.S. Supreme Court has protected students' individual abilities to pray, wear religious dress, and express their religious beliefs while in school. • School and student-led prayer at special events have been ruled unconstitutional. • 1963-the Supreme Court ruled that lessons with religion have to objective instruction rather than indoctrination. • The Department of Education created guidelines that allow schools to teach courses in the history of religion and the role of religion in the history of the U.S.

Background • Often listed as the fourth largest religion in the world, and includes many different types of Buddhism. • Buddhism was founded in Northern India by Siddhartha Gautama (Buddha), but Buddhists believe there were many Buddhas before him. • Does not involve the recognition or worship of deities and does not teach the existence of the human soul. • Buddhism takes a very straightforward look at our human condition; nothing based on wishful thinking, at all. • Meditation is at the heart of the Buddhist way of life, and the teachings of Buddha reveal a step by step path to lasting happiness.
