Highly Qualified – Why? • Definition – • If you teach core academic subjects in a program supported with Title I funds you must be highly qualified upon initial employment. If you teach core academic subjects and you are not a new teacher, you must be highly qualified
How do I become Highly Qualified? • You can take and pass the PRAXIS exam(s) required for the core academic subject area(s) for which you are seeking to become highly qualified; • You can complete requirements of new, streamlined add-on (endorsement) certification(s) in the area(s) for which you are seeking to become highly qualified;
Can CLU’s count for HQ and License renewal? • Yes, the CLUs earned for purposes of meeting the Highly Qualified definition can be applied toward the 150 CLUs re-licensure requirement. However, the converse is not necessarily true - not all CLUs earned for purposes of re-licensure would necessarily meet the content-specific nature of CLUs required for highly qualified.
What happens if I don’t get HQ? • The district is responsible for sending letters to parents of students being taught by a non HQ teacher • The district is judged on the percentage of teachers who are highly qualified and certified. • The district has the responsibility to assure that each child is taught by a highly qualified and certified teacher. • A teacher could be released if he/she did not attempt to become HQ.
