How did Oktoberfest start? • It started when Crown Prince Ludwig married Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen on October 12th, 1810. • The land that the marriage was held on was named Theresienweise (Therese’s Field) in Munich, Bavaria. • Also known as “Wiesn” • Horse races were held after the wedding and lasted for 5 days.
History of Oktoberfest • In 1811 the year after the wedding the festival continued with more horse races and a newly added agricultural show. • In 1816 Carnival booths appeared. • In 1819 the city of Munich assumed responsibility of the festival and agreed that it would be held every year without question. • To honor King Ludwig I and Therese they had a parade for him in 1835, then in 1850 it became a yearly event. • 1854 Cholera epidemic cancelled Oktoberfest. • 1880 Electric Lighting illuminated and allowed night time celebration • 1881 Bratwurst Booths • 1887 Breweries appeared at the festival • 1892 Beer served in the classic glass mugs
O’zapft is! • The first Saturday of Oktoberfest the current Mayor of Munich taps the first keg at 12 o’clock noon. • This event is held in the “Schottenhamel” tent. • Held from September 18th through Oktober 3rd. • Largest Fair in the World • The most important thing at Oktoberfest is not the rides or attractions but the beer. • The price of a Maß is 8.60 Euro’s as of 2009 which is equivalent to about $12.75 but it is served in glass mugs that hold a litre. • 12 oz is the standard American size. • 1 Litre = 34oz or about three 12oz cans. • It comes out to about $4.00 per standard 12oz American beer.

Statistics • 103 Acres • 6.2 Million Visitors • 7 Million Maß’s drank • 80,000 Glasses of Wine • 521,000 Chickens served • 142,253 pairs of Pork sausage • 38,650 kg of fish • Pork knuckles: 58,446 units • Oxen: 104 units, • Electricity used was 2.8 million kWh • People lost about 4000 items, among them 260 pairs of glasses, 200 mobile phones, wedding rings, crutches, and even dentures ended up in the lost and found. • The only real problem aside from war cancellations was a pipe bomb attack in 1980. 13 People were killed, 200 Injured only 68 of 200 seriously injured. The suspect was killed in the explosion.

Media References • Oktoberfest has been mentioned in movies and games. • The movie Beerfest is based during Okoberfest but not directly in the festival. • The media portrays Germans wearing Lederhosen and a lot of people think that is the attire worn in Germany. • Where the lederhosen attire is mainly worn as a traditional costume during Oktoberfest.
