  2. “Some of the communication dynamics emphasize the more negative, disruptive effects of group interaction, while others show a more positive, unifying influence. Together, they serve ac conceptual tools with which to describe, and perhaps explain, the nature of CMC.”

  3. The Different Faces of Anonymity Not an either-or phenomenon, and there are always different degrees of anonymity that varies from situation to situation i.e.- In a chatroom someone may use a nickname but in an e-mail they’ll probably know the other person’s name

  4. Disinhibition Any behaviour that is characterized by an apparent reduction concern for self-presentation and the judgement of others

  5. Deindividuation • The group activity simply becomes more important and the individual’s self-awareness diminishes, almost like the crowd or group takes on a mind of it’s own

  6. Polarization • Adjusting behaviors and opinions so that they are oriented or conform to one end of a bipolar continuum • i.e.- In a chat room Bob starts talking about how Bush was right to send troops to Iraq. Billy is very in favor of Bush’s move while Stacy is extremely against the war and wants out troops to come home.

  7. Conformity • The tendency to allow one’s opinions, attitudes, actions and even perceptions to be affected by prevailing opinions, attitudes, actions and perceptions • As with anonymity, conformity can also be a positive or negative force in group dynamics

  8. Cohesion • A tendency to stick together or to be united either physically or logically

  9. Interactivity • The extent to which messages in sequence relate to each other, and especially the extent to which later messages recount details of earlier messages

  10. Identity • Group identity doesn’t have to be based on real similarities or shared interests • Social Identity Model of Deindividuation Effects in CMC a.k.a. the SIDE Model • SIDE model is based on the idea that a person’s identity is comprised of their individual or personal identity and their group or social identity
