  3. 2. Jack resents Ralph for being the leader. He asks the boys to vote Ralph out – he is embarrassed when the boys support Ralph.

  6. The boys fear the beast and decide to build a fire on the beach.

  7. 6. Piggy is happier and more relaxed. He is relieved because without Jack, there is no pressure. Piggy even helps to gather wood.

  12. Chapter Nine

  13. 1. Simon realizes that it is the decaying body of the parachutist. He vomits, then feels sorry for the dead man. Simon frees the lines. He decides he must tell the other boys.

  14. Simon respects the dead man’s dignity. This represents Simon’s personality. He is sensitive, kind and mature.

  15. Piggy is more confident and he stands up for himself. Perhaps, Jack’s absence allows Piggy to be assertive. Unfortunately, Piggy is losing faith in Ralph as a leader.

  16. Above all, they are hungry, but they want to make sure that “nothing happens.” Something does happen!
