  1. Homework: Become as familiar as you can with the concept of ‘Atlantica’ – what are it’s potential advantages/disadvantages, and what are the arguments for and against it?

  2. Atlantica • The International Northeast Economic Region • Defined by “… geography, economic trends and trade patterns; common problems and experiences; and politics.” • The site mentions reciprocity. What is that? • No tariffs • Dual access • But colonial duties and British support for the South

  3. “Atlantica was bypassed.”

  4. If we look at a map of the region, what are the Maritimes natural markets? • Confederation favored central Canada • Politics and economics have hurt both regions • Other places have become much more rich, populous, and powerful

  5. In our current economic circumstances, the North-South relationship should become more important • We should not think about borders so much as we think about regions • Networks are very important, and where could we have the strongest network?

  6. What about some other important networks? • The Silk Road • British trades routes • The railways in the US and Canada • They switched trade from a North/South axis to an East/West axis

  7. This was not Sir John A. MacDonald’s first choice … • National Policy network vs. reciprocity with the US • The border became more than just political

  8. Maritimes: Business to the Central/Western regions • A similar problem in the US part of Atlantica • South, Midwest
