  1. Lessons from Pawpaw’s garden

  2. Start early • Good habits are best started in childhood (Ecclesiastes 12:1) • We should be anxious to start work • “I hastened and did not delay to keep Your commandments” (Psalm 119:60) • Our hours in His service are not known (Psalm 39:4-6); we must use what we have wisely (John 9:4)

  3. Work hard, work steady • Work has always been our calling (Genesis 2:15, 3:17-19) • Work is why we are “re-created” in Christ (Ephesians 2:10) • Work should be our delight, and can be if we let it (Ecclesiastes 5:18-20) • Breaks are exceptions; God revives us so we can resume work (Psalm 119:25)

  4. Keep your eyes open • For daily lessons … • In life(Deuteronomy 6:6-9; Proverbs 24:30-34) • In the Lord: “The Lord’s lovingkindnesses indeed never cease, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.” (Lamentations 3:22-23)

  5. Keep your eyes open • For daily hazards … • From predators: “Vindicate me, O God, and plead my case against an ungodly nation; O deliver me from the deceitful and unjust man!” (Psalm 43:1) • From hard work itself(1 Cor. 3:12-15) • From life in the world: “For man is born for trouble, as sparks fly upward” (Job 5:7)

  6. Keep your eyes open • For daily opportunities … • To serve: “For you were called to freedom, brethren; only do not turn your freedom into an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.” (Galatians 5:13) • To learn: “Good and upright is the Lord; … He instructs sinners in the way. He leads the humble in justice, and He teaches the humble His way.”(Psalm 25:8-9)

  7. Keep your eyes open • For daily opportunities … • To improve: “Finally then, brethren, we request and exhort you in the Lord Jesus, that you received from us instruction as to how you ought to walk and please God (just as you actually do walk), that you excel still more.” (1 Thessalonians 4:1)

  9. Don’t complain • Complaining doesn’t make the work easier (Numbers 14:26-30) • Complaining doesn’t make you feel better • “Therefore I will not restrain my mouth; I will speak in the anguish of my spirit, I will complain in the bitterness of my soul.” (Job 7:11)

  10. Don’t complain • Complaining doesn’t help your relationships with others (Philippians 2:14-15) • “Be hospitable to one another without complaint. As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.” (1 Peter 4:9-10)

  11. Follow up • Work is wasted if we prematurely consider the job finished (1 Corinthians 3:10-11) • Problems arise, no matter how well the foundation is laid (Galatians 1:6; 3:1; 4:15-16; 6:6) • Many problems must be addressed repeatedly (2 Peter 3:1-2)

  12. Work in faith • We find satisfaction in doing our part (1 Corinthians 3:12-15; 9:16-18) • We find hope in watching the Lord do His part • “Faithful is He who calls you, and He also will bring it to pass.” (1 Thess. 5:24) • Our confidence in the resurrection motivates us (1 Corinthians 15:19)
