    4. Proper Adjectives A proper adjective is formed from a proper noun. Many proper adjectives describe nationalities or locations. 3. Was Maurice Sendak French? Rewrite sentences 4-8 using the proper adjective following the pattern we did together in sentence 3.

    6. Read Aloud Poems often explain or describe an idea. We will be reading a poem aloud, pausing at appropriate places to indicate the end of a sentence or to emphasize an idea. One way to better understand a poem is to ask questions, such as “who is the speaker of the poem?” and “What is the speaker telling me?” Self questioning can help you focus on the main idea of the poem.

    9. Read Aloud Questions Why does the poet say the artist is like a child? Because the artist loved to paint. (Characters’ Traits) Why can the artist have anything he loves “Fair and forever” if he paints it? The thing he loves doesn’t leave or change in the painting. (draw conclusion) Put yourself in the artist’s place. Describe how painting might help ease the hurt of something you may be facing. Painting can help you show your feelings instead of just keeping them inside. (Poet’s craft/Personal Response) How do you think the poet feels about artists? What clues do you get from the poem? The author admires artists because they can create permanent pictures of things they love and use paintings to express themselves. (Author’s Viewpoint.)

    10. Word Relationships Many words have the same or similar meanings as other words (big, large, enormous.) There are many word pairs that have opposite meanings (bit and little.) Good readers look for clues to help them understand what they read. As we read aloud the examples, look for nearby synonyms and antonyms that will help you understand the underlined words)

Pay attention to the way in which text is organized so you can better understand what you are reading. Genre and Summary Autobiography Look for the author’s personal thoughts and feelings First person point of view William Joyce tells how television, toys and pictures in books influenced his drawings when he was a kid. He also talks about how he plans and creates his books using two of them – George Shrinks and Dinosaur Bob- as examples.

(Point of View) When William Joyce says, “On the best days, writing and illustrating is like getting paid for recess,” is he stating a fact or an opinion? Explain. An opinion; someone else might think it feels like something different. (Fact/Opinion) What is the author’s tone and style of writing? Find an example from the text to support your answer. (Important details) How can you tell, without reading the main text, what page 427 will be about? There are pictures of a small child on this page, and large type that says, “When I was a kid.” The words, When I was a kid stand out and look like a title. This kind of heading gives me a clue as to what I will read about next. Also, there are pictures of a young child on the page. I think the information on this page is going to be about William Joyce’s childhood. (Text Structure and Format)

Joyce wrote and illustrated his own stories; he took art lessons; he read many books for ideas and inspiration; he copies other artists. (Summarize) Re-read the second-to-last sentence on page 428. What would be a good antonym for the word famous in this sentence? Unknown, unpopular, unimportant. (Word Relationships) How would you describe William Joyce? He has a sense of humor, is creative, and enjoys using his childhood memories and experiences in his work as an adult. (Characters’ Traits)

    33. Pages 428-429 Continued Why do you think Joyce does not have much trouble being inspired to create books? He decided to draw things that he liked. Page 429 tells me that Joyce enjoys writing about things that he likes. When I ask myself how that affects what he writes, I find that liking to create new characters, unique places, and adventures helps him come up with book ideas. (Self-Question)

I look for words that are different size or style from the rest of the text. I see that the author has included large, thick, bold type on page 432 that says Dinosaur Bob. I think this will be what he will tell about next. (Focus Strategy: Use Text Structure and Format)

    35. Pages 430-431 Why is it important to William Joyce to like what he writes about? It takes a long time to create a book, and liking the subject helps Joyce stay interested in doing all the work that is necessary to finish it. (Draw Conclusions) How can you figure out the meaning of the word Loose in the second paragraph on page 430? I use context plus synonyms to determine meaning. I know the first drawings are loose and are the sketches mentioned, so loose must mean rough or unfinished. (Word Relationships)

He wants to show the creative process that he describes; to show the process and steps involved in completing a book. (Author’s Purpose) Why did Joyce write George Shrinks? As a child, he was fascinated by things that were the wrong size. He was inspired by some of his old toys and thought it would be fun and scary to write about a boy’s experience of being the same size as his toys. (Cause and Effect)

    47. Classify/Categorize This is a way to organize things that have common features into groups. William Joyce classifies the art mediums he used; watercolors, oils, pencils, pastels, charcoal, crayons, felt-tipped pens, pen, and ink. Re-read the paragraph on page 428. I read that William Joyce said that he tried all different mediums, and then he lists a number of items. He talks about his favorite illustrators and names them. I can see that he has classified two things, artistic mediums and artists.
