A Hero often remains nameless, such as the New York City firefighters who sacrificed their own lives on 9/11 to save others • Another example is Dave Sanders who is the teacher at Columbine High School who lost his life saving students on April 20, 1999 • Or Tom Burnett, the hero of United Flight 93 that crashed in Pennsylvania on 9/11 • These are examples of true modern heroes, who made the ultimate sacrifice of their lives to protect others.
CELEBRITIES • Celebrity is merely well known • Celebrity portrays an image, rather than her true self, with all its flaws and inconsistencies • Celebrity created by his/her image
Celebrities, like Madonna, continually re-invent themselves to stay in the public eye • What becomes important is not who Madonna really is, but what image she is projecting this year • What we see is not a true person, but the product of a brilliant marketing strategy

Characteristics of a Celebrity • A celebrity is highly visible-well known. • A celebrity is usually recognized for some form of talent, beauty, or material quality. • A celebrity is usually recognized for a performance. • A celebrity's image or recognition in the media may change.
Similarities of Heroes and Celebrities • Some celebrities have performed heroic acts using their wealth and fame. • Some celebrities who are also considered heroes include Oprah Winfrey, Christopher Reeves and Angelina Jolie. • These celebrities have used their wealth and fame to improve lives of others by starting foundations to help people in need.
Differences between Heroes and Celebrities • A celebrity is often rich and famous for talents such as singing, and acting. • Heroes -- although many never become famous -- are self-sacrificing and help advance others, not themselves. • Examples of self-sacrificing heroes are nurses, fireman, volunteer workers and Anne Frank • Examples of celebrities who are not especially known for heroic acts are actress Lindsay Lohan and celebrity personality Paris Hilton.
