The Design Process • Brief • Brief Analysis • Investigation/ Research • Possible Solutions-Ideas/ Models • Final/Best Solution • Working Drawing • Manufacture • Evaluation
Brief • Brief poses a problem that needs some solution. • Indicates a need to change something. • Indicates a need to make something better. • Short and concise.
Brief Analysis • Breaking down all the components referred to in the brief. • Analyse the problem. • Who will use the artefact? • Where will it be used? • Any other design considerations? E.g. hard wearing, wet conditions, easy to use.
Investigation/Research • Where can I find out more about the artefact? • Examine books, magazines, local shops, internet for exisiting ideas etc. • Measure any objects it has to accommodate. • Investigate materials to be used. • Investigate finishes to be used.
Possible Solutions • What is the main function of the design brief? • Sketches of all ideas. • Models of the better ideas. • Analyse and evaluate each idea/model. • Sketch possible jointing methods/ideas. • Use the best bits from each idea/ sketch.
Final Solution • Incorporates all the best designs/ideas from the possible solutions. • Make a model • Decide on sizes/dimensions • Satisfies the brief. • Practical and achievable. • Well proportioned. • Aesthetically pleasing.
Working Drawing • Includes elevation, plan and end view, all drawn to scale • All dimensions shown on drawings. • Can also include an exploded isometric. • Cutting list of all materials included. • Enlarged details of jointing methods may be included.
Manufacture • Always refer to working drawing. • Is the project within my capabilities? • Is the project practical? • Are all the jointing techniques achievable? • Does the project satisfy the brief?
Evaluation • Does the design meet the brief? • Is the design successful? • If I were to make the design again, what would I differently? • What did I learn from making the project • About the design process • About myself, skills, strengths, weaknesses etc.
