Forest Ecosystem • Ecosystem: a community of living and non-living components in relationship with each other and their environment. • Producers: any organism which uses energy from the sun to produce its own food. • Consumers: an organism which feeds on other organisms in an ecosystem. • Decomposers: an organism which breaks down material and litter.

The Forest Web • In groups, discuss what makes up a forest ecosystem and list the living and non-living things in a chart like the one below: Living things Non-living things (biotic) (abiotic) • As a class, discuss the words in italics from the definition below: • A forest is an ecosystem consisting of living organisms interacting with non-loving organisms.
