  2. Participles • Verbal that is used as an adjective and most often ends in –ingor –ed. • Examples: • The crying Sooner admitted defeat. • Drinking her Dr. Pepper, she glared at the students. • The student participating the most in class discussion often has the highest participation grade.

  3. Gerund • A verbal that ends in –ing and functions as a noun. • Traveling is one of the best things about AGS. • Finding a needle in a haystack is easier than learning verbals. • The test: Can you replace the gerund with the word “it”? • Will not be separated from the sentence by commas.

  4. Infinitive • Verbal consisting of the word “to” plus a verb • Can function as a noun, adjective, or adverb • To lie on the ground seemed silly, but Ms. Kelley was tired. • They lacked the strength to resist the power of Mokiki. • Katherine and her friends went to the mall to steal hundreds of pairs of shoes.
