1. Who was this Encourager Barnabas? • Nicknamed “The Encourager” (Acts 4:36) • Generous (Acts 4:36-37) • Good man, full of the Holy Ghost and Faith (Acts 11:24) • Willing to go where he was needed (Acts 11:22)
Called a prophet and teacher (Acts 13:1) • Called an apostle (Acts 14:14) • God worked miracles through him (Acts 15:12) • Faced persecution even risking his life for the cause of Christ (Acts 13:45, 14:19, 15:26)
Wasn’t so proud that he knew when he needed help (Acts 11:21-26) • He was trustworthy (Acts 11:29-30) • He travels with Paul on his first missionary journey (Acts 13) • Not perfect (Gal. 5:12) Got caught up in a conflict over shunning Gentiles.
Had a sever conflict with Paul over his cousin John Mark (Act 13:13; 15:36-41) • Barnabas was ever the encourager and would take you under his wing; Paul (Acts 9:27) John Mark(Acts 15:39)
Qualities of an Encourager • A genuine heart for people-loving concern for people • An empathetic ear-listener • An eye for potential-seeing people as untapped resources
A consistent source of hope-see circumstances and conditions as changeable • Set a positive and inspiring example
How can I become an Encourager to others? • Pray for God to make you an encourager-God will put you in circumstances and with people and will shape you, if you so desire. • Study Barnabas and other encouragers.
Practice being an encourager-start in front of the mirror then graduate to someone close to you. Make it a daily habit. (it takes on avg. 66 days for something to become a habit) • Use scripture
Outside of the Godhead what is the biggest source of power for our lives? If the Bible is that powerful, then why would it not be the primary source we turn to for encouragement?
Be specific in your encouragement • Pray that God would create a culture of encouragement in your church. • Be wise-when it comes to encouraging someone of the opposite sex be very cautious • Get started
Paul models and teaches possibly what Barnabas modeled. • Colossians 4-encourages those in ministry with him and shows his own need for encouragement. • II Cor. 4:3-5-Acknowledges that our God is the great encourager and suffering gives us cause to encourage.
