Learning at the National Memorial Arboretum: Memorial Design National Memorial Arboretum
The National Memorial Arboretum is a place for all to visit. • It is a place of memories where people can come to remember. • It is also an Arboretum, which means it has lots of trees that have been carefully planted for many different reasons.
We have many of memorials at the Arboretum and they have lots of different designs, with a variety of materials; for example some have statues, some have plaques and some are trees! • A great deal of thought goes into the design of a memorial to help it reflect the group, individual, place or event that it is remembering.
The following slides will show you some examples of memorial designs at the National Memorial Arboretum. • Come and visit us at the Arboretum and see them for yourself! • You might like to think about what kind of memorial you could design for your school or youth group.
Where would your memorial be positioned – does it need to be where the sun rises or sets? Does it need to be near some water? • What materials are you going to use? Why are they relevant to your memorial? • What is your design going to be? Is it a statue, if so what is the statue of? Is it going to be a shape?
Are you going to add any names to your memorial? • Do you need somewhere for people to sit or reflect when they visit your memorial? • What do you think your budget might be for your memorial? • Where will the money come from to pay for the memorial?
