  5. What is Truvada? Truvada is an antiretroviral medication used for the treatment and prevention of HIV/AIDS and created by Gilead Sciences, Inc. Truvada has two main medicinal components called emtricitabine (FTC) and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) which are used to treat patients that are infected with HIV or used as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to protect individuals who have not yet been exposed to the virus but are at a high risk of being infected. Both components work to reduce the activity of an enzyme known as reverse transcriptase, which is an enzyme that HIV-infected cells use to replicate. In essence, the FCT and TDF in Truvada are supposed to reduce the activity of this enzyme, which in turn causes the replication of the virus to be reduced considerably or even stopped altogether. Truvada has been a financial success, raking in $11 billion in profits annually for Gilead while their patients suffered. Truvada has devastating side effects that could have been avoided had Gilead put the safety of patients first.
