Staying Safe on Prom Night Can you guess which coach is on the left in this picture?
Discuss: What is the thing students most look forward to about prom? (Teachers can answer too! What do you remember most about prom?) What sorts of pressures can occur on prom night? Thinking about prom coming up…
Don’t forget to have FUN! Prom is one of the last times you are able to hang out with your entire senior class all at the same time! Be yourself! Try some new dance moves or at least try to follow song directions (to the right, to the right, to the left, to the left, now sliiiide….)! You all have spent plenty of time getting ready for prom, so don’t forget to take lots of pictures of everyone looking their best during your amazing night! Create some really awesome memories.....being sober helps your brain actually remember accurately What it’s all about… ← Can you guess which teacher this is on her prom night?
Some ideas!!!! • Spend the night at your friend’s house • Carpool with friends • Ask a parent to pick you up • Ask a sibling to pick you up • Use a ride-sharing app How are you planning to get home from prom night activities?
Be prepared to deal with the pressures that come with the territory • Not everyone will be as smart as you. There will be some who will decide to drink or use drugs and try to encourage you to do the same. Don’t be caught off guard and say “yes” to something you’ll regret. Be ready to say “No” or walk away. Humor often works in these situations and once they realize you’re not going to join them, they’ll leave you alone. Plan something fun and stick to the plan • Prom is all about the memories. If you and your friends plan something exciting, off-the-wall and memorable, no one will want to leave to drink or use drugs. You can go for coffee, grab a late night bite or even something silly like karaoke. By making firm plans, everyone will have a say and you’ll look forward to just being together. This will be worth far more than one night of bad choices. Be a leader for others to see • Just like peer pressure works to get others to drink or use drugs, it can also work in a positive way. If you’re having a blast and are the life of the party AND you’re staying sober, others will take notice. Show them it’s possible and actually better to have a good time without being intoxicated. You’ll have a great time with no regrets! TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE & SOBER ON PROM NIGHTwww. Safesober.com

Can you spot Ms. Condon in this picture? • You’re going to prom with a group of friends, including your close friend Tyler. You had a great time at the dance and Tyler invites you to an after-party at their friend’s house. At the party, a lot of people decide to drink – you notice one of Tyler’s friends throwing up in the bathroom and their breathing is pretty rough too. What do you do? • You’re going to prom with a group of friends, including a few people your friends are bringing from another school. When you meet up for dinner beforehand, they offer you some “molly” (ecstasy) to take before going to prom. You’re not really into that and don’t want to take it. What do you do? • You’ve just had the best time at prom and you decide to go to an after-party at your friend’s house. At the party, some other students are drinking and you decide to have a couple of drinks too. When you’re ready to go home, no one is sober enough to drive. What do you do?
