Assignment #3 – Networking Components Chris Chafin LTEC 4550.020 10/20/13
Hub • Unsophisticated device that connects several Ethernet devices together so they will act as a single network segment • Operates at Layer 1 of the OSI model • Does not manage or manage any traffic, it just rebroadcasts all traffic • Can have a high collision rate • $10 - $60
Switch • Links network segments • Operates at Layer 2 of the OSI model • Retrieves a message from a source and sends it only to the device it was meant for. • $30 to almost $900
Router • Forwards data packets between networks • Acts as the “traffic cop” • Basically directs the network traffic • Layer 3 of the OSI Model • $30 - $250
Bridge • Connects multiple nodes • Can help reduce traffic on a network • Stops traffic from piling up • Operates at Layer 2 of the OSI Model • $50 -$250
Gateway • Joins two networks with different protocols • Works at any layer of the OSI Model • Uses MAC addresses when routing • $80 - $150
Firewall • Hardware/Software used to prevent viruses and hacking attempts • Inspects packets of data and determines if those packets are malicious or not and if they are allowed or not • Free software - $90 a year • $60 -$300
Wireless AP • Acts as an wired/wireless access point to a network • Broadcasts WIFI signals to wireless devices • $50 -$200
