Henry IV was a popular king • Ended religious civil war • Built a strong army • Rebuilt / built French infrastructure • Encouraged new business • BUT: • Was assassinated in 1610
Louis XIII inherits the throne • Son of Henry IV • Ten years old • Cardinal Richelieu rules France
Richelieu becomes chief minister 1628 • Has goal: • Centralize the power • Weaken the Hapsburgs
Richelieu took power from the nobility • Divided France into 32 regions • Each governed by an Intendant • Appointed by the king • Owes allegiance to the King • Prevented corruption • Weakened the nobility • King gained power

Colbert – Minister of Finance • Mercantilism • Used the intendant system • Reformed the tax system • Encouraged colonization • Expanded the navy • Created industry
Louis XIV on the Battlefield • Spent HUGE amounts of money on the military • Largest standing army Europe had EVER seen • Taxed the people to pay for it • Expanded the French borders
