Meningococcal Disease • Can you really inform someone about something you know nothing about? The answer is no. Yet that seems to be what we have been doing for the last few weeks. • Meningococcal is a bacteria transmitted through saliva. There are many types but the two most common in Australia are types B and C. • Can be contracted by coughing, sneezing, kissing intimately or sharing drinks.
Babies and children up the age of 5 years old • Teenagers and young adults around the ages of 15-25 • Smokers and passive smoking • Winter and early spring (So, right now!) • Why is this? • Babies and children have low immune systems and they are not immunised against many things until they are roughly around age 4 or 5. • Teenagers are going through puberty where their bodies change and they have a low immune system. They also the most common age group found in nightclubs and parties where close contact such as kissing and sharing drinks is common Who’s at risk?
Symptoms • Nausea/vomiting • Dizziness • Confusion • Irritability • Tiredness or Drowsiness • Both strains –Meningitis and Septicaemia develop rashes in late stages but - DO NOT WAIT FOR THE RASH TO APPEAR! • Severe headache • Fever • Sore throat • Lack of energy • Aching joints • Pains in the stomach and/or chest • Stiff neck • Sensitivity to light
